BONNIE NIJST CAPTURES SBA AWARD
NAWBO-LA President is 2007 Women in Business Champion of the Year
(Los Angeles) The SBA Los Angeles District Office announced the winners of
its annual Small Business Week Awards competition. Bonnie Nijst, President of
NAWBO-LA, was selected as the Women in Business Champion for 2007. This entrepreneurial
advocacy award was presented to Ms.Nijst at the 26th Annual Small Business Week
Awards Luncheon held May 30th at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los
Angeles. Hundreds of business owners and friends of small enterprise were on
hand to honor her along with various business champions in specialized categories,
including the SBA Small Business Person of the Year. The celebration is the
combined partnership effort of the SBA and the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce.
Bonnie was nominated for her leadership efforts in the advancement of NAWBO-LA's
mission to promote and foster entrepreneurship among its membership as well
as the approximate 400 thousand woman owned businesses in Los Angeles and Long
Beach. As president of NAWBO-LA and as an active board member for the past three
years, Bonnie's efforts have been directed toward leveling the playing field
for women-owned enterprise. Through these efforts, NAWBO-LA has become a model
organization for the nurturing of the aspirations of all women with dreams of
business ownership.
The daughter of an entrepreneur, Bonnie grew up exposed to the managerial
aspects of operating three separate businesses, all created by her father. They
ranged from an accountancy firm to an import-export company to a restaurant
serving Indonesian cuisine. His "spirit of commerce" was passed down
to Bonnie and her two siblings. Today, all three are business owners. In Bonnie's
case, as the president, CEO and majority owner of Zeesman Communications, Inc,
she directs the operations of a full-service marketing, advertising, and design
firm with a proud heritage of providing services for and purchasing from woman-owned
firms.
Los Angeles SBA District Director, Alberto G. Alvarado praised Ms. Nijst saying,
"In the Southland, where the development rate of woman-owned entrepreneurship
has set the Nation's high-water mark, Bonnie continues to drive the issues of
wealth creation for women entrepreneurs. Her actions in the communal and political
arena coupled with the successful management of her own company make Bonnie,
among other things, a paragon of what young women entering the business field
should strive to emulate. She truly is a woman of influence, whose efforts have
made an impact on the economic landscape of our great metropolis. We praise
her for her spirit of sisterhood and congratulate her as the 2007 Women in Business
Champion."
