NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN BUSINESS OWNERS-LOS ANGELES (NAWBO-LA) SUPPORTS THE GOVERNOR’S PLAN ON COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CARE REFORM
Universal Coverage Critical to NAWBO-LA’s Decision
The National Association of Women Business Owners-Los Angeles Chapter (NAWBO-LA) has announced its official endorsement of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s comprehensive health care plan that requires shared responsibility by all stakeholders and includes coverage of all Californians.
“W omen-owned businesses in the greater Los Angeles region, which employ more than 378,000 people, share the business community’s concern over the growing number of uninsured and the rising costs of providing health care to those we employ,” said NAWBO-LA CEO Helen Han.
She added, “We support the governor’s plan because it addresses globally the challenge of providing comprehensive, affordable coverage to all Californians. As business owners with an important perspective and a critical stake in the future of our state, we recognize our shared responsibility to be part of the solution. We want to help foster a complete, not partial, fix for one of our society’s most significant challenges.”
NAWBO-LA was among approximately two dozen organizations that publicly pledged their support for the Governor’s Plan at a press conference held Sept. 14 at the California Hospital Medical Center. NAWBO-LA was represented by President Laura Yamanaka and Past President Renee White Fraser.
Fraser, president/CEO of Fraser Communications, spoke on behalf of women business owners at the event and noted, “We know that women business owners go out of their way to find health care solutions for their employees. We feel deeply about that, and we know that healthy employees mean a healthy, growing business. They also mean a healthy economy, and that’s something we pride ourselves in, and I know the governor prides himself in, as does the Legislature, for the State of California.”
The Governor’s Plan, endorsed by NAWBO-LA, includes the following elements:
1. Guarantees that every Californian can get insurance.
2. Provides coverage for all and requires that every Californian have insurance.
3. Increases Medi-Cal reimbursements to doctors and hospitals.
4. Promotes balanced financing for health care.
5. Rewards healthy choices and contains costs.
Yamanaka, President of teamCFO, said that NAWBO-LA plans to fully participate in the ongoing process in Sacramento to support comprehensive health care reform for California. She said, “ As business owners and as women, we are concerned about and invested in the well-being of our employees and their families. We care deeply about health care reform — and as the leading organization in Southern California representing women-owned businesses of all sizes and in all industries, we think it is critical that NAWBO-LA be actively engaged in the development of a solution that is as well-considered as the issue is complex.”
