SUPER SEVEN OF LA’S MOST INFLUENTIAL FEMALE BUSINESS LEADERS HONORED BY THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF WOMEN BUSINESS OWNERS – LOS ANGELES
Global Leaders, Environmental Pioneers, Cultural Activators Lauded March 13, 2009 at Beverly Hilton Hotel
(February 23, 2009, Los Angeles, CA) – With Los Angeles being home to one of the most robust economies in the United States, the most influential chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners – LA (NAWBO-LA – www.nawbola.org) will honor the global and national superstars whose businesses are based in Southern California at the Annual NAWBO-LA Leadership & Legacy Awards Luncheon on March 13, 2009. Presented by the Union Bank of California, the 23rd luncheon, to be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., lauds the area’s top achievers who have created a legacy of entrepreneurial excellence.
This year’s honorees include women who have changed the face of business internationally and throughout the U.S. They have:
- Fostered entrepreneurialism in an industry made up of 92% women: the professional skin therapy profession. (Jane Wurwand, Founder, Dermalogica, Inc.)
- Facilitated the first joint meeting of the leaders of the two largest shipping ports of Southern California (Los Angeles and Long Beach) to reduce air emissions from post operations by 50%. (Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D., Executive Director, Port of Los Angeles)
- Built a $900 million human capital service organization providing staffing solutions under the AppleOne banner, workforce solutions under the Agile-1 banner and a variety of business services to workers and clients in the U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico, India and the UK with plans to expand into Brazil and Germany before Q2, 2009. (Janice Bryant Howroyd, President & CEO, ACT-1 Group)
- One of six entrepreneurs in her Indonesian immigrant family, she led the effort to revitalize and elevate NAWBO-LA's messaging and branding. Her firm's work for Rock the Vote resulted in an award-winning design -- a fist with rings on each finger that spell V-O-T-E -- that has become a marketing icon for youth voting in America. (Bonnie Nijst, President & CEO, Zeesman Communications, Inc.)
- From the kitchens of her family’s Mexican restaurants, became a humanitarian and best selling author for cultural cuisine and creates ethnic cuisine with all the traditional flavors sans the fat. (Chef LaLa, chef/author/nutritionist/humanitarian/TV personality, JSB Management)
- Starting as a home based business, built the first printing company in the U.S. to marry eco friendly inks onto a biodegradable fabrication so influential that Coors changed their entire promotional program to utilize it. A heartfelt humanitarian, who as part of a team that raised $98,000 for breast cancer, became second largest fundraiser in California for the Avon Walk. (Carmen Rad, President, CR&A Custom, Inc.)
- During the 9/11 economic downfall that gravely affected her airport retailing industry, she refused to fire any of her employees and bounced back to exceed annual gross sales beyond $30 million. (Bettye Dixon, President & CEO, Concourse Concessions, Inc.)
